During the IFIP WG 8.3 and the SIGDSS Open Conference “DSS 2.0 – Supporting decision making with new technologies” in Paris, France from 2-5 June 2014 a S-HELP workshop and panel took place.
The workshop topic was “Enabling Effective Decision-Making in the Management of Disasters” and the panel dealt with “Decision Making in the Management of Disasters”.
Ten people participated in the workshop and more than 40 in the panel session. Issues related to the themes were presented and discussed. They included, for example, experiences from the use of novel IT applications in the Arkansas Tornado (April 2014), how to incorporate social media in emergency management and barriers to incorporating social media into emergency management.
Moreover, topics such as collective action and decision-making in the management of disaster, the use of predictive agent-based models in the management of disaster, and managing risks in the management of disaster were discussed during the sessions as well.
The lively exchange and discussion of all these issues certainly gave useful input for a successful S-HELP project development.
